** 9 Tips on How to Get an Autograph at a Game **

Ever gone to a sporting event and waited after the game in all kinds of weather to try and get an autograph from your favorite player?  Ever been disappointed?

Sure, most if not all of us have been in that situation before.  Whether it was alone, with our friends or with our family.

But what’s a guy or girl to do?

How can you maximize your chance at getting an autograph from one of your favorite players?

Although not full-proof, the tips that I’m about to share with you do get results.  They are time-tested and are useful whether it is a baseball game, hockey game, soccer game or tennis match, etc.

  • Know the players’ names.  I think this goes without saying BUT if you don’t call out the players by their name, more likely than not they will gravitate towards a fan who knows their name.  If you put yourself in their position, you would probably do the same.
  • Say ‘please‘ and ‘thank you’.  Another basic rule in etiquette, being courteous goes a long way especially if the player didn’t necessarily have a great game, match, etc.
  • Programs.  Game day programs are one of the easiest  souvenirs to get autographed.  Plus they allow enough space for you to get more than one autograph should you be interested in several players.
  • Pen/Marker.  Since players don’t carry pens and markers around with them when signing autographs for the most part, this is your responsibility.  And just to be on the safe side, prepare several just in case one doesn’t work or runs out of ink.
  • Location.  Just like in real estate, the same thing can be said for getting autographs – location, location, location.  The optimal way to increase your chances of   getting the signature of your favorite player is by sitting  in the front row and arriving at the game early.  But getting great seats alone won’t instantaneously get you the autographs you desire.  You need to use your voice and start talking to them to get their attention (keep in mind that they will have their game faces on at this time).  Now if you’re not lucky enough to get prime seats, there is always the player’s entrance/exit area outside of the field following the game.  Because the game is over, the players tend to be more relaxed and willing to sign autographs for the fans.  Again, put yourself in the players‘ position, would you like to sign autographs for people while you’re preparing or after you finished your job?
  • Pushing & Shoving.  If you are vying for position to have the best chance at getting your prized autograph you better be careful because the players are watching you.  If you are seen pushing and shoving other friendly fans out of the way, you can almost be sure to be ignored by the player due to your bad manners.
  • Final word.  If the player you are after is a male, you can increase your chances of getting a signature if 1) you are an attractive female, 2) you have a young child asking for the player or 3) you’re not carrying many sports memorabilia that you want to have signed with you.

With the right game plan, you can be successful in your pursuit of signatures.  If you strategically pick and choose your locations, you will be able to capitalize on your effort.
